Ok, I am totally mystified! I have been playing around here....and testing something out. If some computer geek is out there, and reads this.....please help me to know what and how....

When I use my webcam, I encode the camera using Windows media encoder. I have to hit broadcast so folks can get the camera.

But, I have noticed that if I have the encoder OPEN AND RUNNING, BUT NOT BROADCASTING/ENCODING.....I STILL get viewers that can see my webcam using my IP address! Doing that does not use any of MY bandwidth.....so I have no problem with it.

BUT, explain to me how folks are viewing my webcam WITHOUT me even actively encoding the signal???

With the puter on, the camera on everything is active and can be seen. My best guess is that it is available to your puter and can be acessed by anyone that can access your puter the camer light is on but you can't see it. If I'm away from the puter a couple of hours the camera light goes on that means any program I use with video is trying to access mine.
I'll bet you use Skype to talk to and see your mother and friends instead of the phone because it's free. I think that is were it's at.
I hope you get thru the double talk.

As far as the costs of broadcasting, here is the only way to cure the problem, I'm donating 20 bucks for all of the fun and new knowage I get fom this site not to mention new friends.
Thank you Steve & TK & the RC.

Well thanks DOE!

I am thinking of making a sponsor page so folks can easily donate.....

I have always made it a practice NOT to ask/beg for donations, so the donate button was always on the bottom real small....LOL

I will try the sponsor page, see if it makes a difference:)

NO ask/beg I just thought it was right.

Yes DOE you're not alone in that thinking! Common sense tells a person, "hey, someone is paying for this!"

Steve - I'm looking at the Camstreams "live cams" page - there is information for broadcasters with a new version of the camstreams encoder. Could it be something to do with that?

Adopt a driver and his truck kat!
See what the Queen will be up to next!
Watch live scenes of America as we roll down the road!
Join in the crazy antics of the roadcrew!
See beautiful photos, taken by a talented photographer.
Watch thrilling high speed videos, sure to make your heart skip a beat!
Just a little from alot will help keep all this possible!

I agree, Duke. After all, the Road Crew are the ones benefitting from Steve's generosity. It would be a nice gesture if everyone who can affort it did the same as you.

Taco - are you in marketing perchance!?

VT- No, I do not use the camstreams encoder. I use the windows media encoder...which basically does the same thing. In theory, it should not allow viewers if I am not broadcasting. LOL. I know there is a way for folks to get my IP address, and look at my cam that way, and it DOES NOT even use any of my bandwidth

VT, no I'm not. I just love what BRS does for all of us and love to tell anyone I think will enjoy his site.
I'm missing the cam so bad right now, but understand why he has it turned off.

Did your new brake chamber mounting bracket arrive yet?

Taco - I'm with you on that. Did you get your computer problems sorted?

VT, no on puter. Daughter is buying me a new one. I just have to not do any online bill paying. Good thing I bought stamps recently.

Wish I could help you, but I've never actually fiddled with a webcam. This one built into my MacBook has only been used once in the past year.
